Electronics in Car

Car electronics run the gamut from climate control to sound systems. Air conditioning and heat can be programmed now so you don’t have to adjust the temperature constantly. Heated seats, windows that defrost, power windows and locks and music players are all operated by electronics. Most car accessories are operated electronically.

Car audio is the most obvious electronic device in a vehicle. Radios, CD players, CD changers and the old school cassette player are electronic devices that are easy to identify as electronics. If you install them after you buy the car you must go to an electronic shop to get the installation completed. Most electronics in car are installed at the factory, but many advanced features are put in the car post-factory. Even air conditioning can be added post factory.

The newest and most useful electronic device to be used in cars is a GPS system. GPS stands for global positioning system. By using satellite, the driver of a car or other automotive can get directions to locations in the surrounding area. There is usually a map visible on the GPS device. Some devices are installed and are an integral part of the vehicle, while others are portable and plugged into the lighter and then run off the car’s electricity.

Electricity is also necessary for the function of TV’s and other entertainment installed in vehicles. TV’s are made to fit in overhead compartments until you push a button and the screen discends from the compartment. They are also suspended from the ceiling or placed in seat backs for the passengers in the back seats to view. Usually there are headphones that provide the sound for the videos on screen. There’s normally a connection to the traditional sound system as well. Speaker systems also operate with electricity powering the system. Sometimes there are as many as eight or more speakers in a car, side speaker, front speaker, rear speakers, etc.

Car electronics have evolved and will continue to do so. The complex electric systems that cars have allow for a wide variety of new devices to be installed in vehicles. Sirius radio requires satellite connections, Lojack security devices and electronic fuel injection are more electric operated systems. Whether the electronics are accessories or an integral part of the car’s engine, electronics are advancing the amenities of a vehicle and the comfort that electronics in vehicles provide. Air conditioning, heat, entertainment and GPS devices all contribute to making an automobile more comfortable and there all operated with electricity from the vehicle.
